Don’t mess with my mall

I have admitted in the past that I am a shopaholic. Shopping; not necessarily buying, brings me much pleasure. I was not very happy yesterday while reading that malls are now going in a different direction due to many empty stores. They say malls will become “community centers”. Uh…I don’t need community…I need my stores! The malls are now inviting businesses like grocery stores, dry cleaners, indoor skate parks and gyms. YUK…this is not a mall, this is what I find on almost every street corner around…a strip mall. I shop my many, many malls for a different kind of experience other than a strip mall. They are two totally different places and I don’t want to see the two mixed together.

Damn this recession…it’s ruining everything! If I go to one of my malls and start walking towards my favorite store Macy’s and pass a Home Depot on the way…I may lose it. I don’t see Home Depot putting in a shoe department in their store. (fyi – there is a Home Depot in Palisades Center in N.Y).

What the ????

I found out that I can now drive an hour from my house and legally have small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine and heroin on me. So let’s see, this weekend do I go to the beach or head to Mexico for drugs. This is insane…they had photo’s in the newspaper of people injecting themselves with heroin on the streets of Tijuana. Do you ever read or hear something and just shake your head and say “huh”?

I have gone to TJ (that is what Californians call Tijuana) a few times to do the tourist thing, but lately the killings of innocent people from drug cartels has skyrocketed so there is no way in hell I would head for the border. And I really don’t want to be bargaining with the street vendors and see someone injecting themselves…yuk.

The thing is too that thousands of U.S college students go to Mexico each year because the drinking age is 18 (not to mention it’s very inexpensive). Now they can get drugs very easy…I’m so glad my kids have graduated college and have moved on.

So just a warning to you parents…keep your kids out of Mexico if you can.

Rent to Impress

Can someone please explain…I saw on the news how people “rent” such things as designer luggage and sunglasses to impress people when they travel. Why? Are people really this ridiculous? Can anyone give me one good reason why you would do this? Maybe I’m missing something.

Brown thumb policy

I stopped at Home Depot the other day due to some house plants dying and the need to replenish. I don’t have the greenest thumb; I think my problem is overwatering. I’m a worry wart in life so I think that overwatering makes sense…I’m always worried that that they are thirsty.

So, I’m in the plant department and a worker asked me if I needed any help. I asked which plants were “hardy” since mine are dying. He told me to bring back the dying ones since their policy is a year guarantee on all plants. I told him I’m not that kind of customer and I couldn’t do it. He told me “just return them”. I told him again that I’m not like that and I don’t even have the receipts… he told me I don’t need the receipts. I then told him it may be my fault that the plants are dying…he told me it doesn’t matter whose fault it is. I then asked him how they know if I bought them at Home Depot…he told me again it doesn’t matter. Then I asked what if I threw away the container the plant came in…he told me to bring it back in a paper or plastic bag. And you know flowers like mums that are known only to last for a short time…you can even bring them back.

Talk about customer service…a store actually insisting you bring something back after you tell them you don’t want to bring it back. He told me that Home Depot is banking on you spending more than the money you get back (they do give back store credit).  Well today I am going to bring back two plants that are dying. I still feel kind of stupid doing it but “Steve” insisted and he‘s going to personally assist me in my return. Way to go Home Depot!

Am I weird feeling weird about bringing back a dead plant that I’ve had for a couple of months-

“My Husband”

I was pleasantly surprised last night while watching the final “Millionaire” show. Regis asked the gentleman contestant,” who do you have in the audience with you tonight” and the contestant answered “my husband”. A smile immediately came to my face as I thought “good for you”. You just don’t hear that on T.V that often…unless you are watching a sitcom or the Ellen show.  When he said those 2 words “my husband” it just seemed so natural for him that I was hoping all the “yes on Prop 8ers” would see that too.

I know the Daily Dalia goes on and on about Prop 8 and I will continue to until all people in this country truly are considered “equal”. I don’t think I’m asking too much.

Stop horsing around

I live near the Del Mar race track…a very famous race track that opened in 1937 with Bing Crosby collecting tickets at the turnstile; him and some Hollywood buddies started it. People like Lucy and Desi, Mickey Rooney and Jimmy Durante have placed their bets at this Southern Califorina track.

The racetrack  still draws big crowds with their slogan “where the surf meets the turf”. I have gone and placed a few bets myself both here and in New Jersey but my betting days are over due to now being informed. Too many horses are dying…I think this year it’s already up to 10 and our season is short; July to September. Last year there were 8 deaths and the year before 6. These stats may be off by one but even one horse dying due to racing is too much.

I also read last week how they are changing the whips they use to get the horses to go faster to lighter ones since the old ones would leave welts on the skin. Oh, how nice of them.

Do we really need to bet on horses…lets just put our money on dice and cards. If a a card rips we just get a new deck…we don’t have to shoot it. What do you think?

The age old question

I will be jet skiing for the next couple of days but didn’t want to leave you hanging too long so I thought I would do a poll…I think people like polls. With this poll you may need an extra day to think about it and then come back to it…that’s how deep this one is!! This topic has been talked about for centuries; I’m sure it has broken up marriages & friendships. It drives some people just plain crazy. OK…here it goes-
