I decided to review this movie on my front page – https://dailydalia.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/this-is-it-really/

Where the Wild Things Are

Go to fullsize image

I had never read Where the Wild Things Are but the previews for this movie intrigued me so I went to see it. I must say it is a very “odd” movie that held my attention the whole time. The “wild things” were quite adorable and just looking and listening to them made the movie for me. The little boy, I believe was miscast, but he did OK. This is a hard movie to recommend because it is just so different…the 13 year old I went with said it was the dumbest movie she had ever seen. I, on the other hand, enjoyed it.

My final grade is a B

Couples Retreat

Go to fullsize image

The scenery is one of the best highlights about Couples Retreat…once again a tad disappointed in this one. The cast was great, including my favorite Vince Vaughn but the writing was lacking intererst immensly! The comedy was invisible and with this crew it should have been much more noticable. Maybe the buget went into renting out the island?

My final grade is a C

The Invention of Lying

Go to fullsize image

I must say the concept of The Invention of Lying  is fabulous…a world where no one lies…but one person. You would think a world of lying would be great but this movie showed you that sometimes you need to lie. I thought Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner were very cute in this. I would recommend this movie mainly because it is just different. It will make you both laugh and think which is a good combo…right!

My final grade is a B

Whip It

View Image

Drew didn’t disappoint with her directorial debut of Whip It! I think what I enjoyed most about this movie was the sport of Roller Derby and trying to figure out the game and the rules. The story moved, the music rocked and the characters were all enjoyable. I wouldn’t call this a “chick flick”…oh how I hate that term but I will use it so hopefully this movie won’t shy away the men ( I want Drew to get good ratings). It’s worth not waiting to rent it!

My final grade is a B+

Fame

Go to fullsize image

I’m gonna live forever…no, the movie Fame should have not been re-made. I was very disappointed in this movie…the only thing that kept me going was the dancing (which was only OK). I felt like the teens of this movie were not casted very well…I didn’t really care for any of them. The teachers were again “OK” but no powerful players in this one. The story was weak but I was expecting a big finale…wrong. Fame…I will be disappointed forever.

My final grade is a C-

Love Happens

Go to fullsize image

It just so happens that Love Happens is a wonderful movie…much more then you think it is. If you are expecting a gushy love story you will be disappointed, it really isn’t a love story at all. It is about coming to terms with the truth and dealing with the death of a loved one. Of course Jennifer Aniston is adorable in it and Aaron Eckhart is also quite charming. Regis Philbin refers to him as the next Robert Redford…possibly. I wasn’t expecting much with this but got a whole lot in return.

My final grade is an A-

District 9

Go to fullsize image

I wasn’t sure what to expect with District 9 but I know I like movies about Aliens…this was on odd one. I’m not even sure what to write…maybe the aliens don’t want me telling you about it. I will say that it held my attention, I did “feel” something in the movie and it was much better then the Blair Witch Project! If you don’t like Science Fiction then definitely stay away from this one.

My final grade is a C

Taking Woodstock

Go to fullsize image

When I first saw previews for Taking Woodstock I was very excited; I am a fan of those times. I must say though I was disappointed…where was the music? The story is basically a behind the scenes look of Woodstock which is fine but at least give us more of that great music that was played. I did enjoy just watching the simplicity of the 60’s…life just seemed easier in ways back then. There were no big names in this movie…I think “John Boy” was the only person I recognized. I think the premise was good but the execution lacked. I do love my peace signs though!!!

My final grade is a B- (maybe a C+)

500 Days of Summer

Go to fullsize image

Now we all know that summer does not have 500 days but I was fooled by the title of “500 Days of Summer“. I would say the best part of this movie was the way it was filmed…uniquely. Watching the relationship of these two unfold is what the movie is all about and it’s done in a clever way. I really enjoyed Zooey Deschanel’s  performance (and I love her name) along with Joseph Gordon Levitt (from Angels in the Outfield). It can drag at sometimes but all in all it was pretty good…the ending was adorable (one line in particular).

My final grade is a B-

Funny People

Go to fullsize image

If you are expecting Funny People to be funny, it really isn’t; I would say it is more of a drama with a few funny scenes (also very many raunchy scenes too). It’s a story about the relationship with these 2 guys…I enjoyed just watching the two of them. If you can get past the vulgar jokes (I think they refer to the penis about a thousand times) I think you will enjoy this story. I loved the fact that they incorporated many comedians into the film. They should have shaved about 20 minutes off the film so be prepared for a little dragging on.

My final grade is a B-

The Ugly Truth

Go to fullsize image

The ugly truth about The Ugly Truth is that it’s a pretty good movie; better then you would expect. And for all you men it is not a “chick flick”…it is a comedy/love story (my boyfriend liked it). There is humor, a little sex talk, and then a pretty good story…what more do you want for this type of movie. Katherine Heigl and  Gerard Butler have great chemistry and they both deliver good acting. I also liked that it was 96 minutes…that is the perfect length of a movie. I just think the ending could have had a little more feelign and creativity put to it.

My final grade is a B

Orphan

Go to fullsize image

I must admit I am a sucker when it comes to scarey movies…I have loved them since I was a kid. The previews to Orphan intrigued me so I indulged in some hopeful horror. I enjoyed the mom’s preformance played by Vera Farmiga…great job! I was slighly scared but always entertained…this “little” girl is just plain evil! There were a few parts I had to cover my eyes because of blood but as far as scary movies, this is somewhat realistic.

My final grade is a B-

I Love You, Beth Cooper

Go to fullsize image

I wouldn’t exactly say “I Love you, Beth Cooper“, but I would say “I liked Beth Cooper”. Some stupid teen movies can be quite endearing with a moral at the end of the story…you did learn a lesson at then end at that is not to sell yourself short. I enjoyed both lead characters; I just wish they didn’t make her such a bad driver because it didn’t add to the movie. I actually thought it was dumb and the constant boyfriend showing up was also overdone. You could definitely wait to rent this one.

My final grade is a C+

Public Enemies

I will admit to everyone, the main reason I saw Public Enemies is because Johnny Depp was in it…I just love him. I must say I was a bit disappointed with his dialogue…there was not enough “Johnny” talk . I don’t know much about John Dillinger but I really didn’t want him to get caught…he was a good “bad guy”. The movie was a too long…about 1/2 hour, and I felt it just needed more story. I would say to rent it.

My final grade is a C

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

I was a big fan of Ice Age 1…I think I missed 2 but since I am a sucker for 3D movies I went to see the newest; Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur. I have to say I was disappointed but it was my fault…I didn’t know it involved Dinosaurs and that it took place in the dinosaur’s “turf”. I think one reason I like Ice Age is because it took place in snow…I don’t know why but I like snow movies. There was some pretty good humor but I really do not like the parts where the 2 animals (I have no idea what they are) go after the acorn. It actually drives me crazy and I would guesstimate that 20 minutes of the movie was them.

My final grade is a C

My Sisters Keeper

Go to fullsize image

Exactly what I thought from the previews, let me warn you if you see this movie bring your tissue. My Sisters Keeper  is definitely a moving story that deals with cancer, family, love, the law and most of all unselfishness. I have not read the book so I can not compare but the movie brings a great story to life and shows that you can be very brave at an early age. Cameron Diaz does an excellent job playing the mom of this dying girl. Its nice to see her in a serious role where she can show a different side to her. I enjoyed the whole cast. I don’t know if I would bring a young child…it does get rough watching her puke from chemo.

My final grade is an A

The Proposal

The Proposal is exactly what you suspect it will be…a cute summer movie…so what’s wrong with that. It’s your typical story of boy and girl not liking eachothter but then things happen. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds do a great job holding your interest. I would say my favorite actor in this movie is Betty White…she is so funny and fabulous! Are there any surprises or twists…no. But if you just want to relax and see a nice movie I recommend this one.

My final grade is a B

The Hangover

If it’s funny you are looking for then it is funny you shall get with The Hangover. I don’t laugh outloud much in movies but this one delivers what a good summer comedy movie should…comedy.  Honestly when I saw the previews I though “another stupid get drunk movie” but this one is different, it’s not predictable and the characters all deliver such a great performance. There were a couple times I thought “this scene was stuid” but for the whole, it’s worth a trip to the big screen. Oh…and stay until the end (that is all I will say).

My final grade is a B+

Up

Go to fullsize image

I was very up to seeing UP but then after the first half hour myenthusiasm went down. This movie appealed to me from the beginning, I think the old man character looked very interesting for some reason. I must say I absolutely loved the beginning…it was so heartfelt…actually so much so that I wondered if the kids would understand exactly what was goin on. The part I started losing it was when the house first landed and they came across the bird and all those dogs…I felt that did not match the mood of the beginning. There wasn’t a nice flow…one movie started and another one ended. But I think I may be the only person who wasn’t thrilled with this Pixar…it’s getting rave reviews. Oh well.

My final grade is a C-

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Go to fullsize image

Once in a blue moon a sequel to a movie is better then the first…there is no blue moon in this case. Night at the Musuem: Battle of the Smithsonian was very disappointing because I liked the first one…it had a good story and some heart to it. This one is stupid but did have a few parts that made me chuckle like when the pharoah was sitting in Archie Bunkers chair…now that was funny! I also enjoyed Lincoln, he was good. I like Amy Adams but her role as Amelia Earhart was quite annoying…don’t think Ben Stiller needed a side kick. I also wish the first characters were in it more rather then being locked in a box for most of the movie. Overall…we could have done without a part 2.

My final grade is a C-

Angels & Demons

Go to fullsize image

I was a fan of The DaVinci Code so I wanted to give Angels and Demons a try…I was not disappointed. Tom Hanks of course gives a great performance along with Ewan McGregor. This movie is full of plenty of action along with some intrigue. The only thing I had a hard time with was trying to figure out the clues that Tom Hanks was clearly understanding since that is his job. I really don’t think anyone could follow that part of the movie. I can’t say much about the ending but let me just say…my boyfriend was fooled but I was not! Although it was 2.20 hours long I was never bored. Definitley worth  the theater price and not waiting for the rental.

My final grade is a B+

The Soloist

Go to fullsize image

I remember when I first saw the preview for The Soloist I was very excited to see it, it looked like a heartfelt movie. Then I grew leary with the more I saw in previews and was hesitant to then see this flick. I was right…it was very slow and boring, 2 words that I don’t do very well with. When Jamie Foxx’s character would start ranting it would go on for too long and then I would lose interest. I think the story line was good but just done wrong. The two main characters didn’t really connect the way I thought they should have. Not enough feeling for my taste. I would save this one as a renter.

My final grade is a C-

17 Again

Go to fullsize image

I had high hopes for this movie…I was a hugh fan of 13 Going on 30. But 17 Again lacks the heart and creavity of this topic that in the past has been done so much better. Zac Efron does an OK job along with Matthew Perry but there is no “great” acting in this flick. I can’t tell you how tired I am of movie scenes about teen parties that go out of control…OMG, enough! We need more originality writers!!! If you are a Zac fan or young I belive you will like this movie.

My final grade is a C

State of Play

Go to fullsize image

State of Play may put you into a state of confusion…at the end my boyfriend and I looked at eachother and said “huh”…I also heard the couple in front of me say “so was it the blank and blank that did it” (I don’t want to tell you thier exact words). Even though I was a little confused it did hold my interest and had a great cast that kept me entertained. I like Rachel McAdams but thought she was not the right choice for this part. If you like some intrigue and figuring things out you will like this movie.

My final grade is a C+

The Knowing

Go to fullsize image

I just know you enjoy the Knowing! This was one of those movies that I didn’t expect much but came out knowing my money was not wasted. I can’t tell you too much about it because that is the best part of this movie…if you don’t know anything about Knowing. Nicholas Cage does a good job and you will not be bored. But if you know too much about Knowing then I know you will be a tad disappointed. (have I said know enough). Just go and see it.

My final grade is an A-

Sunshine Cleaning

Go to fullsize image

Stop what you’re doing and go see Sunshine Cleaning; it’s one of those movies where you just sit back and enjoy a good story. From the creators of Little Miss Sunshine they did it again (they must like the word SUNSHINE). Both Amy Adams and Emily Blunt give great performances about 2 women who clean up after a crime scene. It’s not gory at all, instead it is both meaningful and comical. The story is brilliantly told. My only objection is the ending could have had a little more “umph” to it (if you know what I mean).

My final grade is an A-

I Love You, Man

Go to fullsize image

Man, if you want to see a fairly funny movie then see I Love You, Man. I really like these 2 actors and they have some good chemistry on the big screen. Some of the humor may be a tad too raunchy for some but I laughed out loud…and so did the 10 other people in the theater. I liked this movie because it does bring up the subject that men do have different kinds of friendships then women. I really enjoyed Rashida Jones in this movie, I had never seen her before and she is adorable. I do think the ending could have had more substance. But all in all it was a good light comedy.

My final grade is a B-

Duplicity

Go to fullsize image

I needed a map to get out of the theater, that is how lost I was after seeing Duplicity. I heard Regis Philben say he was cofused too so I don’t feel that stupid. All I can say is I think if you can follow it that it is a decent move. It’s been a while for Julia Roberts to be on the big screen and she did not disappoint, Clive Owen was also good; the two complimented eachother. It’s basically about 2 spys and you know how entangled spys lives can be. Throw in some “going back in time” and wham…cofusion for me.

My final grade is a C (I may have given it a B if I wasn’t so tired in the theater)

The International

Naomi Watts & Clive Owen in The International

The International is a movie that needs your complete attention…something I’m not that good with. I was actually very proud of myself for the first 3/4 o f the movie…I was following it and basically understanding the plot of a bank trying to control the debt of the world. Because after all controlling debt means power. The action was entertaining, especially the chase at the Guggenheim. But then, the last 20 minutes I was lost, maybe I started thinking about my grocery shopping list for a second. All in all it was a good thriller movie with a good cast.

My final grade is a B-

  Coraline

Go to fullsize image

I have come to the conclusion that I just don’t get “dark” movies as I found out once again when I saw Coraline. I keep trying but I have yet to find one I enjoy. I liked the beginning although a tad slow at least I understood it. I was thinking the end would have a good moral to the story but once again, the darkness left me with a blank stare at the end. What am I missing? I don’t think I would call it a kids movie, I really don’t know the target age for something like this. If anyone knows, you tell me.

My final grade is D (maybe the fact that the theater was freezing lowered my grade).

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Go to fullsize image

I have to confess…I did not like Confessions of a Shopaholic. I really wanted to like this movie being somewhat a shopaholic myself and I am a fan of Isla Fisher but it was just too stupid. You can have a cute good movie, my example would be 13 going on 30 or Legally Blonde but this one was so silly. Too many predictable scenes like walking into a closed door or spilling a big platter of food on a table you are trying to avoid…yawn, snore! The only originality I saw in this movie was when the mannequins started talking…that part was actually cool. I just thought the story could have been more sincere and less slapstick.

My final grade is a C- (although I contemplated a D but Isla is so cute)

The Wrestler

Go to fullsize image

You don’t have to wrestle with the idea of seeing this movie, The Wrestler should be on your top 5 list. Now I’m not into wrestling at all, I would say only about 10-15 minutes of the movie actually takes place in the ring, it’s the story that is so great and the way it was filmed (not to mention that fact that it takes place in NJ). Mickey Rourke definitley deserves his nomination for the Oscar for best actor, he plays this character to the T and Marisa also shows us what she is made of. The one thing I loved about this movie is how they actually show how wrestling is all staged…and how back stage they are all buddies. This movie never drags, the story sucks you in and keeps you all the way to the end.

My final grade is an A-

He’s Just Not That Into You

Go to fullsize image

First let me say He’s Just Not That Into You  is not a “chick flick” as I heard a man say as he exited the movie. Yes, there is no blood, guns or violence but it is a well written story about relationships. So if you are a man and you have relationships with either men or woman, then you should see this movie…everyone should see the movie. The cast is great, there are too many big names to name here but they all come together and tell a story about men and women, how they act, think and behave in relationships. It is funny, sad, truthful  and entertaining all in one. Perfect Valentine’s Day movie because I think you will both enjoy it. And if you have a guy that won’t see it with you then you know what, “he’s just not that into you“.

My final grade is an A-

Gran Torino

Go to fullsize image

Gran Torino is more than a movie with a classic car, it also has a classic movie star in it, Clint Eastwood. Clint does a great job playing a smart mouthed, angry, old bitter bigot. The premise is about a gang that tries to initiate a boy that does not want to be initiated and has a hard time getting a back bone. In steps Clint to teach him his version of being a man. If you are expecting a lot of violence and action then you will be let down. Its actually a very touching story that happens to have much swearing and racist name calling in it. I actually cried at the end. See it, you may learn something.

My final grade is a B+

Frost/Nixon

Go to fullsize image

Well Ron Howard does it again with Frost/Nixon, great movie. I vaguely remember this interview happening but what an interesting story and very nicely done. Frank Langella does an awesome job as Tricky Dick hence his Oscar nomination for best actor and the movie is also up for best picture. I put a lot of stock in a movie’s ending and this one had me at Watergate. I felt emotional which I didn’t expect. Even if you are not political I think you should see this movie… just for the ending.

My final grade is an A

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Go to fullsize image

I am a fan of Kevin James (even though when we met he was not that kind to me) and I have to say he makes the movie, Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The writers could have done so much better because the potential was there. I saw a Home Alone meets the Mall but it didn’t quite get there. Kevin has great comedic timing and knows how to deliver a line.  I don’t know much about Jayma Mays who plays his love interest but she was just adorable. I was not happy with the ending, it should never have left the mall. Kids seem to like the movie but I think adults could take it or leave it.

My final grade is a B-

Defiance

Go to fullsize image

Regarding Defiance, you may think you know all the stories about the Nazi’s and the Jews but you may not know this one about the 4 Bielski brothers who hid in the woods for about 3 years saving almost 1200 Jews (this movie is based on a true story). Daniel Craig (the newest James Bond) did a good job, he was interesting to watch. He played the “Moses” of saving the Jews, I could see many similarities of this movie and The Ten Commandments. They both even actually went through/in water.  Of course the movie was a little too long…again, 2 hours is long enough to tell a story and this one was 2:17.

My final grade is a B

Doubt

Go to fullsize image

Doubt was one of those movies that I wasn’t ready for it to end, it left me with unanswered questions which drives me crazy. The story is about a priest who is suspect to “improper behavior” of an alter boy. The head  nun played by Meryl Streep is determined to expose him. I think it was Meryl’s performance that kept me attention the entire movie, she is the ultimate of all actresses. The story is a little slow moving but the interest is still there. I went to Catholic school when I was younger so I was getting lots of memories. A good movie but still not Oscar worthy.

My final grade is a B

The Reader

Go to fullsize image

You have to kind of feel odd about liking The Reader, I mean a 15 year old boy is having sex with an adult woman but you can’t help like the story. You totally become absorbed in the characters and the plot. Once you get over the eerieness then it all starts coming together. Every actor was cast perfect and did an excellent job. And yes, Kate Winslet did earn the Golden Globe that she won for her performance, awesome job! But still I don’t see it as Oscar material…its very good but not a WOW. I don’t know if I have been WOWed yet for this year’s contenders.

My final grade is a B+

 Slumdog Millionaire

Go to fullsize image

It just won the critics award for best picture, Slumdog Millionaire seems to be the talk of the town and a possible Oscar winner. The only reason I went to this movie was because of all the talk and it was well worth 2 hours of my life. A slumdog goes on a gameshow and wins mega bucks…suspicioulsy. I liked that you really did not know how this was going to end, it was not predictable. I enjoyed the characters even though I did not know anyone in the cast, sometimes I just go to a movie because of the cast. It was a wonderfully told love story, the kiss on the cheek stole my heart.

My final grade is a B+

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Go to fullsize image

I was very curious about this movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button so I bit the bullet to sit through the almost 3 hour movie (I usually pass on these ever since Titanic). It is such an odd premise that it did keep my interest but it was too slow and yes, it could have been a 2 hour movie. The idea of going backwards in life though is intriguing and Brad Pitt did a wonderful job. I just wish the story had more ups and downs, it seemed too even keeled the whole time. Kate Blanchett also was very good, she is a naturally beautiful woman. I hope the movie is not nominated for the Oscar but Brad deserves the nomination.

My final grade is a C

Marley and Me

Go to fullsize image

Marley and Me is yep, you guessed it, about a dog. I surprisingly liked the movie but Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson made it hard not to like it. What I liked was it spanned over the entire life of the dog so you were attached to him. It was a nice story about a family…plain and simple. There really isn’t much more to say.

My final grade is a B

Milk

Go to fullsize image

I was fotunate enough to see Milk minutes away from where it all happened, the Castro district of San Francisco which made it that much better. What an interesting story about the first openly gay elected official. It was part movie and part documentary so you get to see actual footage of the happenings back in the late 70’s. With prop 8 passing this year it made it especially hard since this movie dealt with prop 6 which did not pass…history should have repeated itself. Sean Penn delivers a superb performance along with James Franco but I do not see this as an Oscar winning movie. Everyone should see this, you will learn something and hopefully have some more compassion for any minority.

My final grade is an A

Yes Man

Go to fullsize image

Just say yes when someone asks you if you want to see Yes Man.  If you want a feel good movie that will make you both laugh and think at the same time then you will enjoy. Jim Carey is of course just funny with his body and facial language and I also liked Zooey Deschanel, she is cool! This movie has basically a good concept, if your life stinks then do the opposite. If all you do is say no then try saying yes. Have you ever seen the Seinfeld episode where George does the complete opposite, instead of always ordering tuna salad he orders chicken salad! I guess it makes sense.

My final grade is a B

Seven Pounds

Go to fullsize image

When I would see previews of Seven Pounds they were very vague which was part of the marketing ploy… they did not want to give away the big “secret” at the end. Well, the whole movie I patiently waited since the story was unfolding at the pace of a turtle and at the end was highly disappointed…that is all I will say. I would have to say this is the first movie I really did not like Will Smitsh’s character, he  seemed so one dimensionable. Lets see…if I had to say one good thing about this movie it would be Rosario Dawson, I do enjoy her. All in all I was expecting more from Will and being an end of the year movie you expect better.

My final grade is a C-

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Go to fullsize image

I never saw the original The Day the Earth Stood Still so I have nothing to compare the remake to. I love the concept of the movie…an alien coming to us bascially saying your ruining earth…unless you change we will ruin you. And yes, we are ruining earth, even more so now then ever. But…and there’s a big but, I did not understand the ending. Maybe my mind wandered off for a minute and I missed something?? That is where I wish I had a rewind button…what the heck did I miss? The acting was good, Keanu did well along with Jennifer Connelly (which I have never been a big fan of). Will Smith’s son was in it, he was OK, nothing really special. It could have had a little more action in it…I was very fidgety.

My final grade is a C+

Twilight

Go to fullsize image

I have to admit I liked Twilight even though I am not a teenage girl and I have not read the book. Again, I went only because there was nothing else to see but was intrigued the whole time. I’m not into vampires but they do have a quality that is mysteriously appealing. I like a movie that draws me in and this was exactly that kind. It had a little bit of everthing, action, love, suspense and some blood. I was never bored which says a lot. Of course they set it up for the sequel which I’m sure I will be at.

My final grade is a B

Four Christmases

Go to fullsize image

Every Christmas they come out with some good holiday movies and some bad ones, Four Christmases happens to be one of the bad ones. Honestly it was quite stupid most of the time, storylines that they must of had the just junior high writers write. The only saving grace was the fact that Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn were in it. I kept saying to myself while watching “didn’t Reese win an Oscar…why is she doing this dumb movie”. My only excuse for going is that I had absolutely nothing to do on Thanksgiving and I was kind of looking for a good laugh…oh well.

My final grade is a D

Quantum of Solace

'Quantum Of Solace' Is Biggest Bond At Box Office - Movie News...

Quantum of Solace will probably be my last Bond movie, I guess I want to remember Bond they way he was 20 years ago. This one was quite different, the biggest difference being there was hardly any love/sex scenes as Bond is so well known for. Of course the movie starts with a big car chase followed by a foot chase and then a fight. I find with these chase/fight scenes the camera is always moving so you never can really tell what is going on, a big pet peeve for me. The one thing I missed the most was there were no, I mean NO cool gadgets. What is Bond without gadgets. Why do things have to change…if its not broke then don’t fix it! Keep with the Roger Moore genre. Maybe Bond can have a child and those movies can be The Bond Child Movies and let James stay the same.

My final grade is a C

Role Models

Go to fullsize image

I’m on a roll with Role Models in seeing a few good movies in a row. This movie is definitely predictable but it doesn’t matter in this case. Sometimes you just need to see a feel good movie and who cares if you know how it is going to end. I love sarcasm as we all know and this movie has that along with good humor (not the ice cream) and a pretty good cast. I do think they could have cut down on the kids swearing and being obsessed with “boobies” but other then that…it was funny. And if you are a KISS fan like me, then you will give it a few more points!!

My final grade is a B+

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Go to fullsize image

I guess sometimes the key is don’t expect much and then be pleasantly surprised! Beverly Hills Chihuahua was a really sweet movie, I think the previews did not do it justice, there is so much more to the story. The relationship between Chloe (BRILLIANTLY played by Drew Barrymore) and Delgado (Just as brilliantly played by Andy Garcia) makes the movie. There is depth to realizing who you are and what you can be. George Lopez also has a great part…a dog with a heart that isn’t realized at first. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who is a Disney Fan (and likes dogs…you don’t have to be a chihuahua lover).

My final grade is an A (for a kids movie)

Zach and Miri Make a Porno

Go to fullsize image

I didn’t think I would go see this but yet again, I was desperate for a movie. Zack and Miri Make a Porn is definitely vulgar but I really enjoyed it. I laughed outloud (rare for me) and it actually had a decent storyline.  I was a bit surprised that they got away with an R rating…it should be NC17. I highly recommend not letting your 16 year old see this! The thing I liked most was the depth of the relationship of these characters and some pretty cool lines (especially between the 3 men at the end). Yes, there was alot of sex and foul language but the writing had quality. If you can handle some swearing and nudity, it’s worth it.

My final grade is a B+

The Haunting of Molly Hartley

The Haunting of Molly Hartley

The only reason The Haunting of Molly Hartley received an extra $5.50 in profits (from my movie ticket) was because it opened on Halloween. I wanted to see scary but unfortunately the only time I covered my eyes was when they were sticking this really long tube up her nose…gross! I can’t really say anything good about this movie, oh wait…it was better then Blair Witch Project. Whew…I was always told to see the good in everything. I sometimes wonder about these writers…is this honeslty the best they can do. Now that is scary.

My final grade is a D

 Pride and Glory

Go to fullsize image

Edward Norton brought me to the movies to see Pride and Glory (not literally), I basically see anything with him in it. The story is not a new one, good cop/bad cop but I enjoyed the characters, and the storyline and certain scenes were done exceptionally well. The one scene I liked was between a husband and wife…I loved the way it was written and his last line in this scene was “don’t worry, I got your back”…under their circumstances it was a very loving line! I also liked the fact that they had a few scene’s with men crying due to sadness…that’s rare. But…and there is a big BUT…the last 15 minutes was soooooooo stupid. Did they bring in a pinch hitter writer for the ending…it did not fit the whole feeling of the first 1hour, 45 minutes.

My final grade is a C (7/8 of the movie deserves a B+ though).

The Secret Life of Bees

Go to fullsize image

FINALLY, I hit on a good movie. The Secret Life of Bees is a heartfelt story that although it moves slow the story grabs you and keeps you the whole entire time. I compare it to Fried Green Tomatoes, a great story but no major “action”. The cast is superb and Dakota Fanning will not disappoint you, I love all her movies, she has true talent (lets keep our fingers crossed she doesn’t end up like Lindsey Lohan). All the actresses did wonderful including Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys. I loved everyones character and Queen L is very soothing to watch, her voice somehow calms me. Make sure you bring a tissue, I would have to guess that the average person (or lets say woman) will shed a tear or two. So if you are looking for a story, a good solid moving story, then I highly recommend this movie.

My final grade is an A-

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Go to fullsize image

This movie is probably one of the toughest I have reviewed…Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is maybe one a 20’s/teen would enjoy. I thought the beginning was pretty good, I was thinking “wow, this has potential” and then it got kind of boring and stupid. I guess as an adult I watched it saying “oh c’mon how could someone do that” and a couple of times I got frustrated. I did enjoy Michael Cera (from Juno) he was entertaining. But if you are over 30, my gut says you won’t love this movie (but maybe tolerate it).

My final grade is a C

Flash of Genius

Go to fullsize image

Based on a true story, Flash of Genius has a great moral to the story but not sure if it is movie worthy. I would think more of an hour documentary on T.V. The body of the movie was too long and boring, I wasn’t sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see if he would win or not (he sued Ford because they stole his intermittent wiper patent). Greg Kinnear didn’t disappoint me, he’s a great actor but I think they could have done better casting his wife (played by Lauren Graham) she just added to the boredom. Of course the best part is the end, the courtroom scene. Don’t read on if you don’t want to know what happens. When he wins, yes, my heart did jump a beat but then it was over with a snap of my finger. I want to see more of the happy…not 98% frustration and 2% relief. That was the same with the movie Pursuit of Happiness. Sorry, but I need more happy time.

My final grade is a B-

Ghost Town

Go to fullsize image

In the words of my son, Ghost Town is Ghost Whisperer but with the word town. The whole movie is basically pretty slow but starts off pretty funny. The middle you could probably take a little cat nap and still be able to follow. The end is where it all comes together and the lead character becomes more like Jennifer Love Hewitt and gives in to his new “talent”. (ghost whisperer fans will understand). I enjoyed Ricky Gervais performance, he is new to me but I can see the potential there. This should have been an hour movie but not a total waste of my time. Just the scene of him getting ready for his colonoscopy and checking into the hospital was worth it to me.

My final grade is a C+…almost a B-

Disaster Movie

Disaster Movie is not a total disaster…they just need to tame it down a tad. The concept of all these movies, Scarey Movie, Date Movie and Epic Movie I think is quite good…making fun of a bunch of movies in one. It’s how they go about it that I don’t like…crudely! If someone with talent was to write one of these and try to appeal to an audience with some kind of I.Q then these  movies could be a hit! Cheap laughs does not go a long ways.

My final grade is a C-

Lakeview Terrace

Go to fullsize image

Any view of this movie, if at all, should take place in your living room…do not waste your money on Lakeview Terrace. Not that I really wanted to see this one but I needed something to do and Samuel did tell me once the pants I was wearing were cool so I gave it a shot. Sorry Samuel, stupid movie! If I had to say one positive thing about it I would say that it made me appreciate the good neighbors I have because I’m sure their are some doozy’s out their. I just got so mad because the person being terrorized NEVER called the police. The whole movie I was thinking how it would never in a million years happen this way, the events would not unfold so half assed. Hollywood writers, you can do better then this.

My final grade is a D

The Women

Go to fullsize image

I don’t want to ruin the premise but The Women is all about women! I don’t even think there is a male in it…I heard one played a waiter but I must have missed that. What a great cast for such an awful movie…blah! Again…no depth…well, there is a tad at the end but not enough to make up for the rest of it. You know who really can’t act…Jada Pinkett Smith, she must get her roles from her husband. This story has been told a million times, the jokes have been seen since Lucy and Ethel. I swear the women next to me that laughed must have not gone to a movie since Titanic. I had to laugh because in front of me were 3 men I would guess in their 50’s and 60’s.  I wouldn’t even rent this one…

My final grade is a C-

Mamma Mia

Go to fullsize image

I didn’t really want to see Mamma Mia, I’m not a fan of the story I saw as a play but I decided to give the movie version a chance…bad decision. I judge movies by how I feel…I felt no emotion in this move…nothing! The only saving grace was Meryl Streep…she is such a top notch actress. OH…and to top it off I went to the “singing” version not knowing…damn! Of course I had singers behind me and I didn’t like seeing the words on the screen. Someone once pointed out to me that musicals that make a story around songs usually are not as good as vice versa…telling a story and then making the songs. They may be on to something!

My final grade is a C

The Little Mermaid on Broadway

Go to fullsize image

The Littel Mermaid was the first newer Disney movie I watched when my kids were young and I loved it so I was very anxious to see it on Broadway…I was not disappointed. Ariel was awesome, her voice and innocent facial expressions were right on the money! Sebastian was super, the best crab you will see on broadway. They did the underwater scenery very clever but that’s Disney for you. I must say though that Flounder’s costume looked like you bought it from Kmart…I don’t know what the heck happend with that. The actress that played Ursula could have been meaner and older, that’s just my opinion. I must say it was one of the fastest 2 hours of my life, I was engulfed under the sea.

My final grade is an A

House Bunny

Go to fullsize image

Hop on over to see House Bunny! Not all movies can be a Crash or Little Miss Sunshine, sometimes you need one of those cutesy, mindless movies to watch and this is one of them. You have to like Anna Faris as the lead role just like you liked Reese in Legally Blonde, they are just lovable characters with big hearts. How can you not enjoy when the stuck up pretty girls get what’s due to them in the end…now that’s priceless. Demi’s daughter Rumer as a small role, not much write home about there. I do recommend this one if you like humor, heart and just want to have a little fun!

My final grade is a B+

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Go to fullsize image

The Sisterhood did it again…I was a huge fan of part 1 and enjoyed part 2 just as much. I like movies where they have different stories going on throughout (like Crash)…I don’t get bored that way. Each girl in the movie has an interesting storyline and they are just about life in general…these are my favorite types of movies. Ever since seeing part one I want to go to the Greek Isles and in part 2 they look just as beautiful. I think they cast all 4 girls well, they just seem to perfectly fit the character. It is definitely a movie that mostly woman will like but there was an older gentleman in the theater that seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it!

My final grade is an A-

Swing Vote

You could swing either way with Swing Vote; if you see it, its OK, if you miss it, that is also OK. The main body of the movie is a tad on the slow side, but not to the point of falling asleep. I do like Kevin Costner so maybe that made it more enjoyable for me. It’s the end of the movie that makes it all come together, especially in this political year. It does have a good moral; every vote does count. There’s really not a lot to say about this movie. I almost didn’t even write a review because of that…maybe I should have stuck to that thought.

My final grade is a B- (only because I liked the ending)

The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is definitely dark, different from all the other Batman’s. This one wasn’t comic bookish enough for me, too much violence and I didn’t like the ending at all. The storyline was pretty good and watching Heath Ledger as the Joker was what made the movie, he would have been nominated for an Oscar. Maggie Gyllenhaal was a big disappointment for this role, she didn’t have any “spark” but neither did Katie Holmes. As most 2.5 hour movies, this was dragged out too long…everyone should just stop at 2 hours! To date, out of all the Batman movies, Batman Begins was my favorite.

My final grade is a C+

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Take a journey to the theater to see Journey to the Center of the Earth! If you just want pure entertainment without analyzing anything I recommend this 3D movie (which is probably why it is so entertaining). The cast is small (basically 3 people the whole movie) but of course Brendan Fraser is great! He had a little of his “mummy” character going on. Since it was only 1.5 hours it went fast, never a dragged out feeling. I honestly think my last 3D movie was Jaws 3 (not counting the attractions at theme parks) so I got a kick out of that…it made the experience fun!

My final grade is a B

Wanted

If you WANT to see a good movie I recommend Wanted, there is plenty of action to keep you stimulated throughout! For some reason I didn’t have high hopes for this one, I mainly went looking for something to do…I was pleasantly surprised. I like when there is more to a story then the trailer shows. Angelina is great in it along with James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. The moral is also a good one…and the last line of the movie says it all!

My final grade is a B+

Get Smart

Get your own opinion on Get Smart because I don’t think I can be totally fair with this review…I just moved and 75% of the time I was thinking I should be unpacking boxes! But I will comment on what I did notice. It was OK, I didn’t feel as connected to the TV show as I had hoped (like I did with The Brady Bunch Movie). I think Maxwell and Agent 99 were perfectly cast…I had my doubts about Anne but she was great. One thing I did miss…I think Steve could have put more of that memorable Maxwell Smart voice into play. The story wasn’t anything to write home about.

My final grade is a C

Fit Flops

Well, I have worn my fit flops 3 days straight and I must say they are the most comfortable flip flop I have ever worn. I haven’t had any model agencies come up to me to photograph my new longer, leaner looking legs (as they claim) but maybe in a month I will see a difference. All I know is I believe I could do a whole day of Disney in these…that’s saying alot. You can get them at Macy’s

My final grade is an A (maybe if I see a differnce in my leg I will ad a plus)

The Incredible Hulk

The Incredible Hulk is not that incredible but pretty good and definitely a lot better then The Hulk back in 2003. I’m an Ed Norton fan and he did not disappoint me. I did feel though that the movie started more in the middle then in the beginning, I wanted to know more about the past. I find Liv Tyler kind of boring, she doesn’t have much passion inside of her so I would have preferred a different love interest. The hulk is pretty cool looking and again, much better realistically then the 1st one. It was funny to have Lou Ferrigno have a small part. I won’t give anything away but the best part is the last 60 seconds…very good!

My final grade is a C+

Kung Foo Panda

I wouldn’t fight my way to see Kung Foo Panda ,it didn’t have much “kick” to it. My companion (11 years old) and I were expecting more laughter with Jack Black being the star (although his panda character was adorable). I felt the story was not developed enough before the ending (not that it should have been longer but more thought put in to the beginning and middle). I was surprised how small Angelina Jolie’s part was. I did hear a man snoring in the theater if that tell you anything.

My final grade is a C+

LOST Season Finale

Find LOST, it is the best show on T.V! These writers are so creative and they really came through once again with the 4th season finale. This show can be classifed as adventure, mystery, action, romance (without showing t&a…very classy), fantasy, comedy, drama, science fiction, etc. I think this season was my favorite (or maybe tied with the first). The acting is great and whoever did the casting did a wonderful job. It’s not too late to catch up, I dare you to rent season 1 and stop…I don’t think it can be done.

My final grade is an A+

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

How dull was the Crystal Skull? I have only seen the first Indiana Jones so I am not a connoisseur on the series but this one was just a little too silly for my taste and the special effects were not up to Steven Spielberg’s standards. This movie has Indiana Jones meeting E.T and then having a close Encounter of the third kind! What I did like is that Harrison Ford didn’t hide the fact that he is older and couldn’t do what he used to as I.J. I also loved that they brought back Karen Allen from the original and I.J. fell for her and not some 20 year old, yeah…finally they have an older man with someone his age!!!

My final grade is a C-

How the Garcia Girls Spent their Summer

Unfortunately I would not spend my summer seeing “How the Garcia Girls spent their summer”. I had pretty good expectations going to this one, it received some good write ups and won awards at  the film festivals. The concept was great, the acting was good but I actually wished I could have taken a little nap during…way too slow moving!

My final grade is a D+

Hard Candy

Madonna still goes strong, her new album “Hard Candy” keeps me bopping along in my car! Although I must say that I love the first half of the CD, the second half is “OK”, I just don’t feel it as much. I find myself playing the first 7 songs over and over and somewhat skipping through the rest. ( Does anyone else think of a rattle snake during INCREDIBLE…creeps me out but I do love it).?

My final grade is a B

What Happens in Vegas

What Happens when writers get mental blocks…this movie. I knew the odds of me liking “What Happens in Veges” were low but I took that big chance, rolled the dice and went home a loser (for giving them $5.50 and 1 hour 39 min. of my life).  Boy meets girl in Vegas, girl and boy get drunk, get married, wake up the next morning and you know the rest! The best line of the  movie was Dennis Miller (playing the judge) who said “It’s not the gays that are ruining the sanctity of marriage it’s people like you”.

My final grade is a C- (and that’s because Cameron Diaz is just too cute)

Iron Man

I-ran to Iron Man being a fan of Superman, Batman & Spiderman! It started out quite good but 3/4 of the way through I think they changed writers. I felt like the ending didn’t match the beginning mindset. Besides the end, there could have been a little more action throuhout. It’s definitely worth seeing (not little kids though) but it sure doesn’t come close to my Spidey!

My final grade is a B-

Deception

Deception…I would definitely tell you to see this decept it was dumb! Ok, that was a reach at a pun but I have to try and somehow jazz this review up.

I knew basically from the beginning what was going to happen, nothing surprised me. This story has been told as many times as happy birthday has been sung. You know at the end of a movie where the credits are just about to come on but you are thinking something exciting may happen so you stay that extra 3 seconds only to see the credits roll and your hopes crushed…that is this movie.

My final grade is a C-

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Don’t forget to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I was pleasantly surprised with this on! But let me warn you, when it comes to R movies this is high on the scale so be careful with teens (full frontal male nudity 4 times). It’s a good story about relationships and I actually laughed outloud a couple times which is rare for me in a movie. I also enjoyed the cast (basically all TV people) and if you are  a fan of How I Met your Mother like I am, Jason Segel did an awesome job!

My final grade is a B+

JUNO (rental)

I DUNO that you should rent JUNO. Ellen Page is wonderful in this drama about life (even though she did not win the Oscar). Yes, you don’t want to promote teenage girls getting pregnant but neither do you want to see a cannibal serial killer in Silence of the Lambs but a good movie is a good movie regardless. I enjoyed the relationships, the sarcasm and just simply put…the story.

My final grade is an A-  (note – The CD is pretty cool too)

SMART PEOPLE

I did not make a smart choice choosing Smart People as my movie of the week. For some reason it was really annoying me that Dennis Quaid’s character always looked desheveled (come to think of it, Sarah JP did too), I just wanted to bring them both to a salon. But when it came to the actual movie, I think they were going for “depth” but just came up shallow. DQ and SJP’s characters didn’t have any chemistry and their story was not developed enough. What I did enjoy was our JUNO star Ellen Page.

My final grade is a C

NIMS ISLAND

Nims Island will numb you; I basically felt nothing during this movie. I went mainly because I love Abigail Breslin and Jodie Foster is also good. During the first 5 minutes I had high hopes but then it was just downhill from there. The movie didn’t flow; the story lines took too long to come together. Jodie Fosters character was annoying, I would have to talk to her agent on that role choice, Abigail is still young so she has an excuse. I went with an 11 year old and she didn’t even like it.

My final grade is a D (my 11 year old companion gave it a D+)

SHUTTER

shutter to think of anyone spending their money on SHUTTER. My son and I were all ready for a scary movie and got bored in return. Let me tell you how bored I was, their were people talking in the last row and I didn’t even care…that was more exciting then what was on the screen. And let me just add…I scare easy. One redeeming part…the woman ends up getting her revenge!

My final grade is a C-

  1. I like this addition to your blog. Good idea! Look at you having all buttons and different tabs to read on. I see the start of something big!

  2. I personally think Iron Man deserves a much better grade than a B-! My friends and I, all comic book fans, were very impressed by the movie. I had very low expectations for the movie so perhaps that is why I was so impressed 🙂

  3. Hard Candy is a great addition to the Madonna catalog of music. It is dance pop in its purest form. It carries less emotional depth than albums like Ray of Light or Like a Prayer, but it reminds us that sometimes you just have to have fun and dance.

I still haven’t heard the rattle snake sound in “Incredible,” but I do love that song. On the top part of my list.

I have heard a few people mention that the second half of the album suffers a bit, except for the saving song of “Devil Wouldnt Recognize You,” which I think is an awesome song.

  4. Addendum: Hard Candy Comment

Ironically, hours after posting my last comment, I was listening to “Incredible” for the millionth time, and I did hear the “rattle snake” sound in the background of the song. I thank Daily Dalia for bringing it to my attention and scaring me now! Each time the noise came on, I felt like I had to look around for a snake, because nothing scares me more than a snake! Thankfully the rattle is only a short part of the song, as a whole.

  5. Speed Racer:
I went to see Speed Racer with three friends (Three men, one woman in total) and we all expected an OK to Bad movie and we were all wrong. Everyone loved this movie and it has been my favorite of the year (even better than Iron Man).

First, the action in this movie is great! The racing is this is really fun, and it is not NASCAR racing, it is fast paced, heart pounding, and imaginative. They also have a couple of fighting scenes and they are also very entertaining, they perfectly capture the cartoony feeling that the fighting is trying to resemble.

And when there is no action there is very good story and plot development. Basically Speed Racer is born to race and wins his first race ever. Afterwards he is being recruited by all the major teams yet decides to stay with his Dad because family is important. It may sound cliched, because it is, but they do it so well that it does not really matter. And the ending, I wont say anything about the ending but it is one of my favorite endings in any movie, ever.

The visualizations/special effects further compliment the movie. The race scenes use incredible special effects that make it look fake but intentionally fake which further adds to the excitement of the movie. In fact, the entire movie has this fakeness to it that makes the movie… it makes it… it is kind of hard to find the perfect adjective because it is just so amazingly well done.

The only flaw to this movie is the camera work. The camera work is actually just as amazing as everything else in it but for some people I have a feeling it may move to fast and make the viewer sick, especially when the camera goes in the car so we see what Speed sees. I have bad motion sickness and I never got sick but just be warned, if you go you may get a bit queezy.

In conclusion, even though this has had poor box office showings don’t worry about it, this movie is incredible (I will probably see it again). This movie perfectly balances out action with comedy (I did not say this before but the movie is hilarious), realism with cartoonyism, and awesomeness with awesomeness, it is a must see for those who may not get sick.

  6. Hard Candy…is a solid C- come on Madonna give us something cool. not more stupid dance music.

  7. I loved this movie and saw it twice. I won’t pay to see it again in the theatre, but I will buy the movie on DVD so I can see it over and over again. I loved everyone in the movie except the daughter’s fiance. He was definitley out of place.
“A” THUMBS UP. And I saw if for the second time with a special someone which made it even more grand!!

  8. twilight- A++++++ ( love it so much)
role models deserves at least an A ( so so so funny)!

  9. just saw the orphan… A-
    pretty good but scared me

    and role models A

    and MAMA MIA (A)

  10. THIS IS IT !
    A++++++++++++
    LOVED IT
